Raising Money for JDRF, On One Wheel
September 22, 2015
The term return on investment might be a little overused these days. Sometimes though, the real ROI isnt exactly about the numbers on the ledger, but more about making a difference when the opportunity presents itself. Last year, young Carson Magee contacted us with an unusual request. While its pretty common for us to receive all sorts of donation requests, Carsons was pretty straight forward and it got our attention.
Carson has diabetes and is actively promoting research and funding for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to find a cure. He participates in 5Ks and such on his unicycle. His unique style and passion for the cause was immediately clear. Carson has a pretty good grasp of marketing already, and knew that his attention getting unicycle 5Ks would be a fun way to spice up his fundraising efforts. It just so happens that Coker Cycle Company builds two different models of Unicycles with huge 36 cycle tires from Coker Tire Company. When Carson discovered the unique (and most definitely attention getting) Unicycles in our lineup, he took a chance and contacted us to see if wed be interested in supporting his cause. A cause by the way, for the very disease he lives with everyday.
We shipped Carson a brand new Big One Unicycle, right away. The funny part was, that Carson wasnt yet tall enough to even ride the thing. No worries, we knew hed grow into it soon enough, and he continued to ride his normal sized Uni in the mean time. We're happy to report Carson is now tall enough, and is already hitting the fundraising trail for JDRF on his Big One Unicycle. Keep up the the great work Carson, we are all proud of you here at Coker!
I finally got tall enough to ride the BIG ONE! I have been raising money for the JDRF One Walk. My goal is $1000 this year! Yesterday was the walk and every year I unicycle the 5K, but this year I unicycled it on the BIG ONE! It was challenging on some hills because I had to carry the weight of the unicycle and my body up the hill, but I LOVE it and got lots of attention, that is for sure! :) Here are some pictures of my team and me riding (oh, and checking my blood!) I just got an insulin pump and it is a big learning curve, especially with exercising! Thank you again so much and I am planning more Unicycling events to raise money for JDRF! -Carson Magee
