December 16, 2016Every year at the SEMA Show, we have a long list of companies to meet and greet. Some have a small presence at the show, while others bring a fleet of vehicles, multiple booths and dozens of employees. Our friends at Omix-ADA pull out all the stops and we're always excited to see what they bring out for the SEMA Show. Their display in the upper level of the South Hall is always impressive, and they typically include a few vintage Jeeps in the mix. This year, we stopped by and talked with Dave Logan, and he gave us the rundown on the awesome Jeeps in the Omix-ADA booth.

November 05, 2016With about 40 miles of walking under our belts, we started the final day of the 2016 SEMA Show with a trip to the upper level of the South Hall to meet with our friends at Omix-ADA. We'll do a full post on their awesome collection of Jeeps...for now, we're going to do a quick recap of favorites rides of the day, and then jump right into the SEMA Cruise and of course, the SEMA Ignited event. This is the third year of SEMA Ignited, and it just keeps getting better and better. The event is held across the street from the Las Vegas Convention Center, and wow...what a show! The SEMA Cruise offered an awesome parade, which resulted in one of the coolest car shows you could ever see. Hot rods, muscle cars, crazy imports, off road vehicles, and more swarmed the SEMA Ignited event, as we enjoyed the nitro dragster "cacklefest", wild action on the drifting course, and plenty of action in the show area. November 03, 2016The SEMA Show is full of highly customized, highly polished and highly publicized cars and trucks. But when you find a unrestored Ford Model A on the property, it stands out! The guys and gals at Hagerty Insurance started a cool program last year called the "Swap to Street Challenge", which involves Hagerty employees finding and building a car on the grounds at the massive AACA Fall Meet in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Last year, it was a very cool '46 Ford pickup and this year, they tackled the challenge with a Ford Model A. They started with a 1930 Model A chassis, and found a 1931 Murray-bodied slant window Model A sedan body to go with it. November 02, 2016The SEMA Show is the largest automotive spectacle in the world, and we're so happy to be a part of SEMA 2016. It's the 50th anniversary of the show, and it's also the 50th anniversary of the Firestone Wide Oval tire. October 24, 2016For motorcycle guys, there are a handful of events that are considered "must-see"...you have Sturgis, Daytona Beach Bike Week, Davenport and so on. We're adding another one to the list and it's not too far away from our headquarters in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It's the Barber Vintage Festival, held at the magnificent Barber Motorsports Park in Leeds, Alabama (near Birmingham). The 12th annual event was just a couple weeks ago, and we went down to check out the action, and of course, represent our company. We're constantly trying to broaden our product lines, and the motorcycle market is growing quickly, so setting up at the Barber Vintage Festival was an excellent opportunity for us to reach some new customers. It is certainly a fertile market for our product offering, so we're excited to attend more motorcycle events in the future, and we will definitely be back to the Barber Vintage Festival.

December 22, 2015We say it often, but the worst thing you can do to preserve a collector vehicle is to let it sit. But sometimes, it's hard to make sense of driving an old car year-round, especially when the climate doesn't cooperate for a few months out of the year. We've always suggested that folks jack up their car to relieve some of the weight off of the tires, which keeps them from developing flat spots. You may also try parking the car on small squares of carpet, so that the concrete floor doesn't put so much stress on a single area of the tire. If you've never experienced flat spots, it's simply a flattened out spot in an otherwise round tire. This causes a vibration that is sometimes severe enough to justify buying new tires. Bias ply tires and radial tires are susceptible to flat spotting, but radials sometimes have a hard time recovering due to the rigidity of the steel belt that rides beneath the tread surface. August 17, 2015Last year, we heard about the Tri-Five Nationals, and instantly wanted to be a part of the inaugural event. It helps matters that it is organized and promoted by our buddy Chris Sondles from Woody's Hot Rodz, which is a shop that specializes in Tri-Five Chevy builds and sells many of our products. As the plans for the event developed, Coker Tire stepped up as one of the leading sponsors, and presented the "Celebration of 60 Years of the 1955 Chevy", a special section with original 1955 Chevrolets of many models and configurations. As we rolled into historic Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky, it didn't take long to see that the Tri-Five Nationals was destined to be HUGE. And that's exactly what it was--the official car count was 1,858 registered entrants, all ranging from 1955 to 1957 Chevys, including a few pickup trucks and Corvettes from the famous Tri-Five years. Tens of thousands of spectators took part in the event, which had drag racing, autocross racing, a massive show-n-shine area, a swap meet and a packed vendor area.

Driving an old car is something that cannot compare to anything built in the last 40 years. The modern advancements of fuel injection, electronic ignition systems, radial tires, four-wheel disc brakes, overdrive transmissions and more offer great convenience for everyday driving. But at the same time, those modern features take the fun and adventure out of driving. When you drive an old car a great distance, it's always a good idea to make a checklist beforehand, so the car can be thoroughly checked. August 25, 2014As part of a multi-day tour, the Carolina Jaguar Club paid us a visit, and toured our facility. Tour Guide, Steve Anderson gave them a wonderful tour, packed with tidbits about our buildings, our cars, and our company history. It was an enjoyable visit to Chattanooga for all of the Jaguar enthusiasts, and we saw quite a few of them eyeballing Corky's '68 XKE roadster in the museum. Many of the cars that visited us were modern Jaguars, but we were pleased to see a '60s XKE coupe, as well as a '56 XK 140 OTS (open two seat), along with the group. Both classic Jag's were beautifully restored, and we were especially partial to the XK 140, as it rolled on a set of our Michelin X 185R16 radials.

August 25, 2014You know it's a special day in the office when the front parking lot is filled with Chevy Corvairs! These little cars offered a lot of "firsts" for American auto manufacturing, with production starting in 1960, and lasting through 1969. Corvairs feature an aluminum, air cooled engine, which is placed in the rear of the vehicle, and it features a lightweight unibody chassis, which helped provide great fuel economy and performance. These cars are certainly not your average classic car, so having more than 20 of them stuffed into our parking lot was beyond cool! We had convertibles, coupes, station wagons, and even had a couple of Corviar trucks on hand for a tour. There was even a Corvair with a small block Chevy crammed in the back seat! The group is part of the Choo Choo Corvairs, a local club that holds an annual show at the Chattanooga Choo Choo. We're glad they decided to stop by and tour our facility...and we hope they saw that we carry a wide variety of tire to fit their distinct classics!

The decision affects the authenticity of your vehicle and it affects the ride quality of your vehicle, but finding a happy medium has not always been an option until now. BIAS PLY TIRES
Bias Ply Tires are authentic for American cars built before 1976, but they don't offer the same handling characteristics as a modern radial. Everyone has an opinion on the upsides and downsides both bias ply and radial tires, but it all boils down to your preference. Our suggestion is to take a good look at your build style and work from there. If you're building a numbers-matching, nut-and-bolt restoration, bias ply tires are the way to go, because your goal is authenticity. Our bias ply tires are built in original molds, which have been refurbished to today's standards and utilize modern materials for a safe and correct tire. In addition to using authentic, original molds, Coker Tire also has licensing agreements to use popular brand names such as Firestone, BFGoodrich and U.S. Royal.Inside a bias ply tire, the cords are run diagonally from bead to bead, overlapping in a crisscross pattern. The bias ply tire progressed over the time it was used in auto manufacturing, but the general construction techniques stayed the same. For instance, the Firestone 6.00-16 that rolled beneath countless passenger cars in the '30s and '40s features the same basic construction as the Firestone Wide Oval tires that were used on millions of muscle cars from 1967 to 1974. Bias ply tires typically follow the ruts and breaks in the road surface, so it provides a wandering sensation if you're not accustomed to driving an old car.
RADIAL TIRES
Starting in the 1970's, many American auto manufacturers began making the switch from bias ply tires to radial tires. Today, radial tires are still in use--and while the tire technology has grown in leaps and bounds since the '70s, each tire constructed using the same basic principles. Coker Tire was the first company to introduce a wide whitewall radial tire, and did so in 1994. It changed the face of the antique tire market, and the line of nostalgia radials continues to grow. Now, Coker offers whitewalls, redlines and gold line tires in both bias ply and radial construction.
The cords on a radial tire run straight across the tire, from one bead to the other. The radial cord layout, in addition to steel belting that rides beneath the tread surface helps stabilize the sidewall and tread patch, while allowing the tire to better conform to the road's surface. While a bias ply tire follows the ruts and breaks in the road, a radial tire will skim across the top and soak up some of the transitions. This makes for a smoother ride, and allows you to release the white-knuckle grip on the steering wheel on a rough road. This year range is commonly referred to as the Midyear Corvette, or the C2, and it is regarded as the most popular generation of the popular Chevrolet sports car. Wheel options for Midyear Corvettes originally ranged from base model wheels that featured full hubcaps (1963-1966), Rallye wheels (1967), and a factory option for "Knock Off" wheels. The Knock Off wheels were not as common as the steel wheel and hubcap combination, so they are highly sought after in the restoration market.

November 20, 2013We have a great relationship with the folks from Bridgestone/Firestone. Many of our top products are licensed by Firestone, and built in the original molds, so we are constantly in contact with them on a business level. This week, we were able to invite them into our headquarters here in Chattanooga, Tennessee, while they were in town for a group meeting. We welcomed the Bridgestone/Firestone Communications team with a small reception in our museum, and gave them a ride to dinner in Corky's 1936 Yellowstone bus. It was a great time, and we're glad they took the time to visit our place!

We do not set up as a vendor at this event because of scheduling conflicts, but it's just too close for us to miss a chance of photographing some cool stuff for our advertisements and catalogs. April 23, 2013Members from Hot Rod Magazine, Chattanooga Visitor Bureau, Family Events and Coker Tire Company were on hand in downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee today to announce Chattanooga as a stop on the upcoming 2013 Hot Rod Power Tour. The massive car tour visited Chattanooga in 2010 bringing thousands of cars, people and revenue to the city. The 2010 visit made a good enough impression to get the encore opportunity in 2013. The event projects over 3,000 participants rolling onto the campus of Chattanooga State throughout the day, with the event hours scheduled from 12:00pm to 7:00pm. The Chattanooga festivities won't stop at 7:00pm, as there's an after-party planned at the headquarters of Coker Tire Company in downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee

My calendar year seems to have important dates that focus around car events. As a died-in-the-wool car guy, I know it is Fall for sure when the AACA National Fall Meet, better simply known as Hershey rolls around. August 06, 2012In 2010, a few fanatical antique motorcyclists made news riding their old bikes across the country in the Motorcycle Cannonball. We were lucky to have them stop overnight in Chattanooga after leaving Maggie Valley on their epic journey. Maybe they were lucky to stop here too, since as soon as the hospitality dinner was complete, one hundred classic iron horses rolled into our restoration shop for service at the SAME TIME. It really was a sight to behold.

April 18, 2012As you know, we love old cars. And we love tires for old cars, but we also have a Service Center for modern vehicles here at our Chattanooga, Tennessee location. We have a great network of regular customers, including Carl Hoffman, who became a customer several years ago. He later moved to Canton, Georgia, but he still makes the trip up here to the Scenic City to have his truck serviced. He is very particular about his truck, which is a 2000 Toyota Tacoma with 396,000 miles and counting! March 30, 2012"Corvette guys" have a reputation for being overly picky about their cars, but when it comes to the high class restorations these cars undergo, we don't blame them for babying the cars. We love to see a great restoration with all the right bits and pieces to make it truly authentic, but we also like to see real survivor--a car that has never been restored, but still has all the right stuff. Last week, we encountered a 1959 Corvette survivor here at the shop, and couldn't help but give it a thorough inspection. A few years ago, a website was considered "good enough", but now, it's common for an automotive aftermarket company to spend quite a bit of resources to maintain a strong social presence on the internet. January 27, 2012As car guys, we surround ourselves with like-minded folks, and we often find that the car guy bond puts everyone on the same page. From regular Joe's to celebrities, car guys are on a level playing field. Take Jay Leno for example: he's a big-time celebrity, but the moment you start talking cars, he's just one of the guys. Granted, "just one of the guys" probably doesn't have a Duesenberg in his collection, but you get the idea. November 18, 2011If you follow our Facebook fan page, then you know we blasted the page with live photos from the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was a great event and we had a blast, as always, so it's time to wrap it up and get ready for the winter season. We met lots of great folks at SEMA, some new to the industry and some old timers like us. We debuted new booth artwork for our indoor booth and a brand new full wrap on our tractor trailer rig, which was positioned outside of the convention center. With new products on display, as well as the completed Marmon Wasp and Honest Charley rat rod truck, our booth(s) were a big hit. Check it out! October 31, 2011In case you haven't heard, Corky really, really likes vintage motorcycles. About a year ago he picked up an unrestored 1917 Harley Davidson with sidecar. It was basically all there but the sheetmetal on the sidecar was pretty rough so our guys, Richard Marter and Delton Scott, completely built a new sidecar body using the bones as patterns. These guys can do anything! The knucklehead sittin in the sidecar is our main man Hal Everett. He is a dang good mechanic...not to be confused though with a dang good sheet metal man...that title still rests on Delton and Richards shoulders! Maybe you saw Hal on our Barn Finds episode of Hot Rod TV recently. Hal's a mess and a fun part of HCG! The bike? It's at Dudes getting the restoration completed. It'll be Dude-ified, restored, finished and shown in 2012.

August 26, 2011My week of events of Monterey/Pebble Beach include a Friday Foray into everything Italian at Italiano Concorso. I ran across a new friend Eric Sander who asked me to photo up in front of his boss's Ferrari Dino with our Michelin XWX tires on it. Williams owns a company called Kings Electronics (www.4king.com) who makes distributor based ignition system testers. Looks like an interesting product. Thought you guys might like the picture of his Ferrari. The guy with me in the second picture is Eric Sander. I have been thinking about a starting a Concours de Elegance in Chattanooga. Since some smart guy already started the Concours de Lemon which features Gremlins and Pintos and all that sort of stuff, I thought my Concours should focus on my kind of folks..... June 02, 2011Chances are, if you've been to our headquarters sometime in the past 10 years, then you've probably seen the Shafer 8 racecar, aka The Coker Special. The ole car has been around for a while and we've driven it across the country more than 10 times, including several coast-to-coast Great Race events. The car has a Buick straight 8 engine in it, and it runs pretty darn good! It's spent a lot of time sliding around Corkyville, but it's about to go on yet another long trip. The revitalized Great Race starts next week right here in Chattanooga and ends at the Hemmings Motor News headquarters in Bennington, Vermont. The Shafer 8 will not be in competition but it'll be on the trip! We'll be riding the route in style! May 16, 2011There's something to be said for a historic race track, be it a dirt track, a paved track or a drag strip. Knowing that gear heads just like you were racing on that very surface 50 years ago is an eye opening experience that will put a smile on any car guy's face. With this in mind, folks around the country are flocking to nostalgia drag racing events at historic tracks. One such event and track, is the Paradise Show-N-Go, held at Paradise Drag Strip in Calhoun, Georgia. Even with this flaw, it was a state-of-the-art track during the \'60s."][/caption] The track opened in 1961, and it was home to lots of big-name match races and also a home track to many Super Stock racers in the mid-60s. Legends of drag racing, such as "Big Daddy" Don Garlits, Arnie "The Farmer" Beswick and "Dyno Don" Nicholson have raced at Paradise Drag Strip, drawing huge crowds to watch the exciting action. Back then, every driver had a nickname, and every car had a distinct personality, unlike today's professional ranks in NHRA, where each car in its class is identical, aside from a few sponsor decals.

May 13, 2011...flock together. And that was exactly the case today, as the Mockingbird Run came through Chattanooga, Tennessee and stopped at Coker Tire Company. These guys and gals are dedicated Thunderbird enthusiasts, and they braved some hard rain to get here, and braved it again as soon as they pulled into the Coker compound. Perry Anthony puts this run together, and has a Thunderbird of his own!

May 11, 2011It's official--we're in full on show season, so we have trucks and trailers, and people running the roads constantly. We have booths set up at nearly 50 events this year, so our guys are super busy with setting up for shows and making sure we have enough product to keep you guys happy! What you may not know is that while our trucks and trailers go to big events, we also hit up a few other shows just for the fun of it. For instance, we dropped in on the NSRA Street Rod Nationals South this past weekend, which is held just up the road in Knoxville, Tennessee. It was a one-day trip, but we saw plenty of Coker Tire supporters in a wide variety of vehicles, from chopped and channeled Model A's rolling on Firestone whitewalls to flawlessly restored Camaros shod with redline tires. We snapped a few pictures along the way, so take a look. We might've grabbed a shot of your car! April 28, 2011We have groups of people come into our facility for tours all the time, but it's extra special when they show up in a cool car! Take for example, the Bandit Run--this event came through Chattanooga a couple of weeks ago, and made a stop right here at Coker Tire. Many Trans Ams surrounded the area, including over a dozen "Bandit" Trans Ams, which parked in front of Honest Charley Garage, across the street.

Now that Coker Tire has acquired the Great Race, you can do just that with a bunch of car guy buddies along the way. The Great Race has been around for quite some time, but the new configuration will have more elements to make your driving experience even more fun! The veterans are tough to beat, but its hard to become one without being a rookie firstcome try it out and youll find out why everyone enjoys it so much! Doing well in any of the Great Race events requires precision, as with any time, speed, endurance rally, and youll find a gathering of very skilled and well known teams at each rally event. March 18, 2011Alright, the weather is beginning to straighten out, and it's time to roll the windows down and go for a ride. As you know, we don't really get into the whole "trailer queen" thing--these old cars are meant to be driven! With that in mind, you should always keep an eye on your tread wear characteristics, to make sure you get the most out of your tires. Tread wear depends greatly on your suspension alignment, and if that's off, you'll chew through a set of tires in no time. Of course, our business is selling tires, so we don't mind if you buy a new set of tires every few thousand miles, but it's important to get this stuff sorted out, so you get a little more enjoyment out of your collector car. Vehicles with solid axles, front and rear, are a little tougher to align properly, while vehicles with independent suspension have a lot more wiggle room when it comes to adjusting camber, caster and toe.

February 21, 2011Through the years, I've traveled to so many events and met so many great people, it's tough to stay in touch with ALL of my buddies. That's why it's so great when people take the time out of their schedule to visit me while I'm in town. This past Friday, my good friend Eric Edwards stopped by with a couple of his friends, which were visiting from Italy. Eric is from Canada and is the National Director of the Horseless Carriage Club of America. The trio was en route to the HCCA National Meeting and Tour at Mount Dora, Florida. I'm glad they stopped by to visit, and it was great showing them around the shop and the museum!

February 17, 2011We get emails from customers all the time, telling us about their experiences with our tires. And as most of you know, we're FIRM believers in driving old cars, instead of letting them sit. Well, take a look at this email we got from Joyce Chance: Model T Ford Touring car 1916/17 from North Pole, Alaska. It was used on the Valdez to Fairbanks trail from 1917 to 1926 and around Fairbanks until 1929 when placed in storage. I got the car in 2006 when it came out of storage for the first time. It was first registered in the Territory of Alaska in 1957. I am the first to register the car in Alaska with a plate. All Coker Firestones. Here are some pictures of the car!

February 14, 2011If you look at our catalog, you'll notice some miscellaneous tires toward the rear. One interesting tire that makes people scratch their head is the Snow Bird tire for Model A's. These tires feature paddles and a heavy duty 6-ply construction, so they are ready for serious action in the snow. The Snow Bird tires measure 28x4.75 inches and mount to a 19-inch Ford Model A wire wheel. They have the original brand name "ARPS Corporation" on the sidewall and they are as authentic as you can get. We rarely get to see a set of these in action, but found these cool videos of Model A and Model T snow mobiles motoring around in the white stuff. Check it out!

February 11, 2011We're around cars a lot and we know one thing is for certain--you won't find a more classic appearance than a set of wide whitewall tires and chrome wire wheels. We normally see them on vintage cars, but the newest version of the Ford Thunderbird has just enough classic styling to wear them well. Our buddy Jesse Adams came up to the shop from Summerville, Georgia and wanted a new set of tires and wheels for his 2002 Thunderbird. Lucky for him, we offer tires and wheels to fit these late model T-Birds, and he rolled out of our parking lot on a set of American Classic 235/55R17 tires, which have 1-3/4-inch whitewalls. January 07, 2011It's that time again! Every winter, the World of Wheels comes to Chattanooga, inside the Chattanooga Convention Center, which is right around the corner from our headquarters on Chestnut Street. It's an indoor car show that always draws a big crowd because of its attractions, and of course the great collection of cars being displayed! This year, our neighbors at Honest Charley Garage are showcasing a few buildups at the show, including the recently-finished 1952 MG TD owned by Wes Kliner.
