Why are my tires leaking air?

Loading...

Air leaks are not what you want to experience with a NEW TIRE, but a few factors come into play that can result in a leak. First and foremost is wheel design. Many wheels for classic cars, especially those from the 1950's and earlier are not designed to be "air tight" meaning they were designed to be used with a tube. Tube type tires were common into the '40s, and feature a different bead style than a tubeless tire. But many tubeless tires, like our wide whitewall radials can be accompanied by a tube when a wheel is not air tight. Wire wheels are notorious for leaking air, and most often need a tube to hold air. We offer many types of inner tubes to fit thousands of applications.

Other factors include a defective tire, a pinhole in the wheel, a pitted bead area on the wheel, or even a puncture due to a nail, screw or other road hazard. You can spot a slow leak by rubbing the tire with a soapy rag, and you'll see a concentration of bubbles in the leaking area.
