Frequently Asked Questions
Fitment & Compatibility â–¼
The 17x7 Cragar 61C SS is designed for vehicles using a 5x4.5-inch bolt pattern, but fitment depends on more than the lug pattern. This wheel has a 7-inch width, 3.75-inch backspacing, -6 mm offset, and a 3.579-inch center bore. These dimensions need to match your vehicle's hub, suspension, brakes, and available fender space.
Before purchasing, compare these measurements with your vehicle's factory or existing wheel specifications. Also check inner suspension clearance and outer fender clearance with the intended tire. A test fit is recommended before mounting tires or permanently installing the wheels.
The 17x7 Cragar 61C SS with a 5x4.5-inch bolt pattern is intended for a range of classic Ford and Mopar applications. Examples include certain Ford Mustang and Torino models, as well as Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, and Plymouth 'Cuda applications.
However, compatibility is vehicle-specific and should not be determined from the bolt pattern alone. Model year, hub dimensions, brake configuration, suspension components, and available wheel-well space can all affect fitment. The wheel's 3.75-inch backspacing and -6 mm offset should be compared with the original or current wheel measurements. Always confirm exact application-specific clearances before installation.
Wheel Size Equivalents & Conversions â–¼
The 17x7 Cragar 61C SS is designed to accommodate modern 17-inch performance tires, with the appropriate tire width selected according to the vehicle and manufacturer's approved rim-width range. Because the wheel is 7 inches wide, excessively wide tires should be avoided even if they can physically be mounted.
Common performance-oriented sizes in the approximate 205–225 mm width range may be suitable depending on the vehicle, suspension, and desired overall diameter, but the tire manufacturer's approved rim-width range should always take priority. Maintaining a similar overall diameter to the original tire can also help preserve gearing, speedometer accuracy, and suspension geometry.
The wheel diameter itself does not necessarily change speedometer accuracy; the overall diameter of the completed wheel-and-tire assembly is what matters. If the new 17-inch tire has a significantly different overall diameter from the vehicle's original tire, the tire will travel a different distance with each revolution, potentially affecting the speedometer and odometer readings.
For example, a larger overall tire diameter can make the vehicle travel farther per revolution, while a smaller diameter has the opposite effect. To minimize changes, select a 17-inch tire with an overall diameter close to the original specification. The tire size should also remain appropriate for the Cragar's 7-inch rim width.
Performance & Use Case â–¼
Yes. The 17x7 Cragar 61C SS is well suited to street-driven muscle-car builds that use the compatible 5x4.5-inch bolt pattern. Its classic five-spoke styling complements vintage muscle cars while its 17-inch diameter accommodates modern performance tires. The wheel is listed as a direct-fit option for various Ford and Mopar applications, including examples such as the Mustang, Torino, Charger, Challenger, and Plymouth 'Cuda.
Its 1580-lb rated load capacity also provides a substantial margin for many passenger-car applications, provided the vehicle's requirements remain within the wheel rating. Exact fitment, tire selection, brake clearance, and lug-nut compatibility should still be verified before installation.
Yes. One of the main advantages of the 17x7 Cragar 61C SS is its compatibility with modern 17-inch tire options. The wheel is specifically designed as an upsized version of the classic Cragar SS concept, allowing classic-car owners to combine vintage styling with contemporary tire technology.
The 7-inch rim width does place limits on which tire sizes are appropriate, so the tire manufacturer's approved rim-width range should always be checked before mounting. Choosing a suitable performance tire can provide improved dry-road grip, braking, steering response, and stability compared with many traditional vintage tires. Final performance will also depend on tire compound, pressure, alignment, and suspension setup.
Construction, Durability & Load Capacity â–¼
The 17x7 Cragar 61C SS uses a hybrid construction consisting of a steel rim and an aluminum center. This combination retains the traditional construction associated with the Cragar SS design while providing the distinctive appearance expected from a classic five-spoke wheel. The wheel is finished in chrome and includes a chrome-plated center cap.
The steel rim contributes to the wheel's robust construction, while the aluminum center forms the characteristic five-spoke section. This combination is particularly appropriate for classic-car builds where traditional appearance is an important consideration. As with any wheel, correct installation, appropriate tire loading, and avoiding impacts or abuse are important for maintaining structural integrity.
The 17x7 Cragar 61C SS has a listed wheel load rating of 1,580 pounds. This represents the maximum load rating specified for each individual wheel and should not be confused with the vehicle's total allowable weight.
When selecting wheels, the rating should be compared with the vehicle manufacturer's axle and gross vehicle weight requirements. The wheel rating should be sufficient for the maximum load carried by that wheel under the intended operating conditions. Tire load ratings must also be appropriate, since the tire and wheel work together as the complete wheel assembly. Avoid exceeding either component's specified capacity.
The 17x7 Cragar 61C SS can be used for street-driven classic vehicles when it is correctly matched to the vehicle and operated within its specified load and application limits. Its steel-rim and aluminum-center construction, combined with a chrome finish, is suited to the appearance and requirements of street-oriented classic-car builds.
For daily use, owners should regularly inspect the wheel for curb damage, bends, cracks, corrosion, or deterioration of the chrome finish. Correct tire pressure and proper lug-nut installation are also important. Avoiding severe pothole impacts and maintaining the suspension and alignment can further reduce unnecessary stress on the wheel and tire assembly.
Installation & Maintenance â–¼
Before mounting tires, inspect the Cragar 61C SS for shipping damage, dents, cracks, corrosion, or imperfections around the bead and mounting surfaces. Confirm that the wheel specifications match the intended vehicle, including its 5x4.5-inch bolt pattern, 7-inch width, 3.75-inch backspacing, -6 mm offset, and 3.579-inch center bore.
Also verify that the chosen tire is approved for a 7-inch rim and that the wheel will clear the vehicle's brakes, suspension, steering components, and fenders. Coker Tire specifically recommends test-fitting the wheels before mounting or painting them. This is especially important for modified classic vehicles where factory dimensions may no longer apply.
Long-term ownership of the 17x7 Cragar 61C SS primarily involves protecting the chrome finish, monitoring structural condition, and maintaining correct installation. The wheel has a show-quality chrome finish, but exposure to harsh chemicals, road contaminants, and improper cleaning can contribute to corrosion or oxidation.
Regularly wash the wheels with mild soap and water, then dry them thoroughly. Inspect for curb damage, dents, cracks, or changes in wheel balance, particularly after significant impacts. Maintaining correct tire pressure and proper vehicle alignment also helps reduce uneven loads and tire wear. For vehicles stored for extended periods, keeping the wheels clean and protected from harsh environmental exposure can help preserve their appearance.
