Frequently Asked Questions
Fitment & Compatibility â–¼
The 17 inch diameter of the Cragar 61C SS is specifically designed to accommodate larger modern disc brake setups. In most cases, it will clear common aftermarket brake kits that would not fit inside smaller 14 or 15 inch wheels.
That said, caliper size and design vary between manufacturers. The 3.75 inch backspace may place the wheel closer to the caliper in some setups. It is strongly recommended to test fit the wheel before mounting tires to ensure proper clearance.
Tire Size Equivalents & Conversions â–¼
The 17x7 Cragar 61C SS works best with tire widths in the 215 to 235 range. Sizes like 225/45R17 or 235/45R17 provide a balanced combination of sidewall support and contact patch.
Choosing the correct tire size ensures proper sidewall shape and even tread wear. Oversized tires may bulge excessively, while undersized tires can stretch and reduce stability.
Yes, the 17x7 Cragar 61C SS can replace smaller factory wheels, but tire selection must compensate for the increased wheel diameter. Maintaining overall tire diameter is important to preserve ride height and gearing.
Switching to a larger wheel typically requires a lower profile tire. This keeps the total diameter close to original specifications and avoids speedometer inaccuracies.
A 225 width tire is an excellent match for a 17x7 wheel. It provides a good balance between grip, steering response, and sidewall support.
This width also fits within most factory wheel wells without excessive modification. It is a popular choice for both performance and street applications.
Performance & Use Case â–¼
The 17x7 Cragar 61C SS supports modern performance tires, making it suitable for spirited driving. Improved grip and stability enhance overall performance.
However, it is not a dedicated racing wheel. It is best suited for street performance and occasional aggressive driving.
Larger wheels allow for bigger brake components, which improve stopping power. The 17 inch diameter provides better airflow around the brakes.
This helps dissipate heat more effectively, reducing fade during repeated braking. It is a practical benefit for upgraded brake systems.
Construction, Durability & Load Capacity â–¼
The Cragar 61C SS features a steel rim combined with an aluminum center. This hybrid construction balances strength and weight.
The steel rim provides durability, while the aluminum center reduces overall mass. This design has been proven over decades of use.
The chrome finish provides a show-quality appearance but requires proper care. It is durable under normal conditions but can be affected by harsh environments.
Regular cleaning and protection help maintain the finish. Neglect can lead to corrosion or pitting over time.
Yes, maintaining the chrome finish requires regular cleaning with appropriate products. Avoid abrasive cleaners that can damage the surface.
Drying the wheel after washing helps prevent water spots. Consistent care preserves the appearance and longevity of the finish.
Installation & Maintenance â–¼
The wheel requires conical or bulge seat lug nuts. These ensure proper seating and secure attachment to the hub.
Using incorrect lug nuts can lead to improper fitment and safety issues. Always match the lug nut type to the wheel design.
Yes, test fitting is strongly recommended before mounting tires. This ensures proper clearance with brakes and suspension components.
Once mounted, wheels are considered used and may not be returnable. Test fitting helps avoid costly mistakes.
Use non-abrasive cleaners designed for chrome surfaces. Regular cleaning removes dirt and prevents buildup that can damage the finish.
Drying the wheels after cleaning helps prevent water spots. Proper care maintains the wheel’s appearance over time.
Yes, lug nuts should be re-torqued after initial installation. This ensures they remain properly tightened after the first few miles.
Regular checks improve safety and prevent loosening. It is a simple but important maintenance step.
