Blackwall Tire

Since the introduction of carbon black rocked the tire industry, the original recipe for most tires has been a solid black sidewall. For classics and collector cars alike, it's hard to beat the no-nonsense appeal of a classic blackwall style tire. British sports car, classic truck and even hot rod enthusiasts love the way a nice period correct blackwall tire looks on their vehicles.

Bias Ply Construction

Bias ply tire construction is a method that was used from the 1900's through the 1970's on passenger cars and light trucks. Bias ply tires feature ply cords that run at a 45 degree angle to the bead, and overlap in a crisscross pattern, depending on how many ply layers are used. This creates a strong tire, but bias ply tires have a tendency to follow breaks or ruts in the pavement. Bias ply tires are the most authentic choice for classic car restorations and traditional hot rod builds. Coker Tire offers a huge variety of bias ply tires for many applications.

BFGoodrich Silvertown Classic Bias Ply Tires

Frequently Asked Questions

Fitment & Compatibility â–¼

Will the BFGoodrich 600-15 Silvertown Classic Bias Ply Blackwall tire fit my vehicle? â–¼

The BFGoodrich 600-15 Silvertown Classic Bias Ply Blackwall tire is designed for vehicles originally equipped with a 600-15 bias ply size or equivalent. It is a direct fit for select vintage European models, early American compacts, and certain 1970s Volkswagens, as listed on the product page. If your vehicle originally used this size, fitment is typically straightforward.

However, you must confirm wheel width and clearance. This tire fits 4.50 to 5.00 inch wide wheels and has a 26.00 inch overall diameter. Vehicles with modified suspension, disc brake conversions, or non-stock wheels may experience clearance issues, especially under compression or full steering lock.

Will the BFGoodrich 600-15 bias ply tire fit properly on my existing 15-inch wheels? â–¼

The BFGoodrich 600-15 bias ply tire is specifically designed for 15-inch diameter wheels, but proper fitment depends heavily on wheel width. The recommended rim width range is 4.50 to 5.00 inches, which reflects narrow factory wheels commonly found on mid-century vehicles.

If your wheels are wider than 5.00 inches, the tire may appear stretched, reducing sidewall stability and altering tread contact. Conversely, narrower wheels can increase sidewall bulge. Both scenarios can impact handling and wear patterns. Always measure your wheel width before installation to ensure correct fitment and safe operation.

How does the BFGoodrich 600-15 Silvertown tire compare to original factory fitments? â–¼

The BFGoodrich 600-15 Silvertown tire is built using original molds and maintains period-correct dimensions and tread design. This makes it highly accurate for restoration purposes, especially for vehicles from the 1950s through early 1970s.

Modern rubber compounds improve durability while preserving original sizing. However, slight variations in inflation pressure or wheel width can affect the final mounted dimensions. For concours-level restorations, this tire offers excellent authenticity, but always compare against original manufacturer specifications for exact match confirmation.

Will the BFGoodrich 600-15 bias ply tire affect steering effort on my vehicle? â–¼

With a section width of 6.00 inches and bias ply construction, the BFGoodrich 600-15 tire typically results in moderate steering effort, especially at low speeds. Compared to modern radials, bias ply tires have a smaller, more rigid contact patch.

On vehicles without power steering, this can feel heavier during parking maneuvers. However, the relatively narrow width helps keep steering manageable compared to wider tires. Inflation pressure also plays a key role, as underinflation can significantly increase steering effort and reduce responsiveness.

Tire Size Equivalents & Conversions â–¼

What radial tire size is equivalent to the BFGoodrich 600-15 Silvertown bias ply tire? â–¼

The closest radial equivalents to the BFGoodrich 600-15 Silvertown bias ply tire include 165R15, P165/75R15, and P175/70R15. These sizes provide similar overall diameter and width characteristics, making them suitable substitutes for modern driving.

However, radial tires have different construction, resulting in a larger contact patch and more flexible sidewalls. This changes handling, ride comfort, and steering response. While radials improve highway performance, they do not replicate the original driving feel or appearance of a bias ply tire.

Will the BFGoodrich 600-15 maintain original stance compared to modern replacements? â–¼

The BFGoodrich 600-15 Silvertown tire is designed to maintain original stance thanks to its correct 26.00 inch diameter and narrow profile. This helps preserve factory ride height and visual proportions.

Modern radial replacements may slightly alter stance due to differences in sidewall shape and tread width. Even if overall diameter is similar, radials can appear fuller or flatter. For restoration accuracy, the bias ply design offers a more authentic look and stance.

Can the BFGoodrich 600-15 be mixed with radial tires on the same vehicle? â–¼

Mixing the BFGoodrich 600-15 bias ply tire with radial tires is not recommended. Bias ply and radial constructions behave differently in terms of flex, grip, and tracking.

Combining them can lead to unpredictable handling, especially during braking or cornering. If necessary, bias ply tires should be installed on all four corners for consistent performance. This ensures balanced handling and avoids uneven load distribution across the vehicle.

Performance & Use Case â–¼

How does the BFGoodrich 600-15 perform in wet or uneven road conditions? â–¼

The BFGoodrich 600-15 features an authentic tread design that prioritizes period-correct appearance over modern wet traction performance. In wet conditions, grip is adequate but not comparable to modern radial tires.

On uneven roads, the bias ply construction can cause the tire to follow ruts or grooves. This tracking behavior is normal and expected. Drivers should adjust speed and steering input accordingly, especially in rain or on worn pavement.

How does the BFGoodrich 600-15 affect ride comfort and handling? â–¼

The BFGoodrich 600-15 provides a firmer ride compared to radial tires due to its bias ply construction. The sidewalls are less flexible in certain directions, resulting in more direct road feedback.

Handling is less precise, especially during cornering, as the contact patch shifts differently under load. However, this behavior is consistent with original driving characteristics of vintage vehicles. For enthusiasts seeking authenticity, this driving feel is part of the experience.

Is the BFGoodrich 600-15 a good choice for show cars or concours restorations? â–¼

The BFGoodrich 600-15 Silvertown tire is an excellent choice for show cars and concours restorations. It uses original molds and maintains correct tread and sidewall styling.

The blackwall design provides a clean, understated look that suits many classic vehicles. Combined with period-correct dimensions, this tire enhances authenticity and visual accuracy, making it a strong option for judged events and restorations.

How does the BFGoodrich 600-15 affect tracking and straight-line stability? â–¼

The BFGoodrich 600-15 bias ply tire may exhibit tracking behavior where it follows grooves or imperfections in the road. This is typical of bias ply construction.

Straight-line stability is adequate at moderate speeds but may require more driver input compared to radial tires. Proper alignment and inflation can help improve stability. Drivers should expect a more engaged driving experience compared to modern tires.

Construction, Durability & Load Capacity â–¼

What does the 4-ply poly construction of the BFGoodrich 600-15 mean for durability? â–¼

The BFGoodrich 600-15 features a 4-ply poly construction, which reflects traditional bias ply design. This construction provides strength and durability suitable for vintage vehicle use.

The crisscross ply layers enhance structural integrity but also contribute to the characteristic ride and handling traits of bias ply tires. While durable, they require proper maintenance and inflation to achieve optimal lifespan and performance.

How durable is the BFGoodrich 600-15 for long-term use? â–¼

The BFGoodrich 600-15 uses modern rubber compounds combined with traditional construction, offering improved durability compared to original vintage tires.

However, bias ply tires generally wear differently than radials and may have shorter tread life under heavy use. Proper storage, inflation, and periodic inspection are essential to maximize lifespan. These tires are best suited for moderate use rather than high-mileage driving.

How does the BFGoodrich 600-15 handle aging and storage? â–¼

Bias ply tires like the BFGoodrich 600-15 can be sensitive to long-term storage conditions. Exposure to sunlight, heat, and ozone can accelerate aging.

Proper storage in a cool, dry environment helps preserve rubber integrity. Even with modern compounds, periodic inspection for cracks or hardening is recommended, especially for vehicles that are not driven regularly.

Is the BFGoodrich 600-15 tubeless and what does that mean for reliability? â–¼

The BFGoodrich 600-15 is a tubeless tire, meaning it does not require an inner tube when mounted on compatible wheels. This simplifies installation and reduces potential failure points.

Tubeless construction improves air retention and reduces the risk of sudden deflation. However, proper wheel condition is essential to maintain a good seal. Always inspect wheels for damage or corrosion before mounting.

Installation & Maintenance â–¼

What maintenance practices extend the life of the BFGoodrich 600-15? â–¼

Maintaining proper inflation, regular rotation, and alignment checks are key to extending the life of the BFGoodrich 600-15. Keeping the tire clean and free from harmful chemicals also helps preserve the rubber.

Avoid using certain cleaners that can damage the tire surface. Proper storage and periodic inspection further contribute to long-term durability and safe operation.
